a little bit about..

Vesturkot is 160 ha. estate. Most of it is cultivated fields and some rangelands, ideal conditions for a small breeding farm. Vesturkot is located 25 km east of Selfoss and is in the Ólafsvellir neighbourhood.

In 2005 we got ownership of Vesturkot and since then it has only been known for horse breeding
but before that it was a farm for cows. We turned the shed into a stable for ca. 30 horses with single and double boxes. We built an 900 square-meter riding hall and an oval track with a pace track. All fences have been updated with shelters and running water.

Here at Vesturkot we run a comprehensive training center and offer training lessons as well we always have some well trained horses for sale. We have a top range of stallions and mare which we offer for breeding and we offer a feeding service for all horses all year round.

The breeding at Vesturkot started in 2006 with Stelpa frá Meðalfelli mother of the famous Spuni frá Vesturkoti. But Spuni was the first foal we got from our breeding that same year we got one other foal, Sólon frá Vesturkoti but he got 8.11 in breeding judgement and has been doing great things on the compeition track in Norway with his new owner Elisabeth Sylte. Now we get around 6-7 foals each year after excellent mares.

Breeding goal

Vesturkot’s breeding goal is to breed beautiful built, good tempered and talented horses.

We try to selected our breeding mares carefully but we do not focus on one specific blood line. We want the mares and stallions to have a strong background with good and successful breeding horses. We focus on breeding good tempered, talented horses and our selection of stallions represents that. We choose what stallion to cover each mare based on improving the mares qualities and also their weaknesses. Our aim is to have few mares in breeding and breed horses that everyone can ride – Quality over quantity.
